North Strand Housing Shelter is now “The Compass Community”

We are now “The Compass Community”

Where we started

In 2009, the founders of North Strand Housing Shelter, recognized the need to assist the
growing number of under-served individuals in Horry County, many of whom were homeless or living in substandard conditions. They initiated a coordinated effort involving faith-based and community support to address homelessness in the North Strand area. In 2010, with private donations, they acquired a house on Route 9, centrally located between Longs and Little River, which became North Strand Housing Shelter. Although the house was in disrepair, community volunteers helped with renovations, and the shelter opened its doors in December 2010.

Fundraising activities and contributions supported the shelter’s initial start-up costs.

In 2015, an additional 5,000 sq. ft. building was constructed on the same property, adding family rooms with private baths and a dedicated wing for veterans, further expanding their capacity to serve those in need.

Approximately 12 acres was purchased in 2020 and the vision to develop a holistic place that empowers our vulnerable neighbors by providing access to affordable, transitional housing, educational resources and life skills through a supportive community was born. Now in 2024, on the eve of beginning to develop this property, we believe it is time for a new name and a new look.

Where We Are Now

The Compass Community exists To be a beacon of light and guidance that helps every vulnerable neighbor in our community find their way.

The North Strand Housing Shelter will still function as is but with a new name, The North Strand Community Home. We believe this name will give more dignity and opportunity to our residents as they acclimate and re-enter into jobs and their own places of residency while still keeping the heart of what we want to accomplish as an organization. The North Strand Community Home exists to provide emergency and transitional shelter for vulnerable neighbors, helping them regain independence to re-enter the community. We serve families with children, Veterans, and individuals.

The 12-acre project is set to begin development late of 2024 and we are calling it, “the Compass Neighborhood” Our mission is to develop a neighborhood that empowers our vulnerable neighbors by providing access to affordable, transitional housing, educational resources and life skills through a supportive community.
